Last month, I had the privilege of joining CAPSI 2025 – the 25th Conference on Information Systems – hosted by the Universidade dos Açores, in the stunning setting of Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island. Yes, it’s as idyllic as it sounds — but the real highlight was the intellectual energy in the room.
Being part of the program organizing committee gave me a front-row seat to vibrant discussions with professors and researchers from across Portugal and beyond, including Brazil. These exchanges weren’t just academic — they sparked ideas, opened doors, and planted the seeds for projects that could genuinely shift the field.
One of those initiatives was the paper I co-authored with Amanda Guerreiro (University of Minho, PT) and Ilka Kawashita (University of Phoenix, USA), titled “From Adoption to Augmentation: A Human Experience Framework for Smart Retail.” We introduced a conceptual model that reframes how organizations can enhance user experiences in smart retail ecosystems. Amanda presented the work and the feedback was sharp, generous, and very encouraging — including interest in developing it further for journal publication.
Next steps? More papers. Stronger collaborations. And a clear focus: intersection of Information Systems, User Experience, and Smart Cities. Because the future of retail isn’t only technological — it’s experiential.
