At FITH 2025, I presented the study “Consumer Behavior – Yogurt Sections”, developed by the EGI Smart Retail Team (University of Minho). The field observation — conducted at Continente Gaia Shopping — followed over 1,000 consumers for six hours, analyzing decision-making patterns and interactions with refrigerated shelves.
A revealing insight emerged: 85% of shoppers physically interact with products, yet 7% abandon the purchase even after opening the fridge door.
These findings shed light on subtle barriers and opportunities in the shopping journey, offering valuable input to design smarter automated replenishment systems that truly align with real consumer behavior.
This work is part of the Smart Retail PT-PRR project, which explores the convergence between human observation and intelligent automation in food retail.
